Motorsport marshals are mainly volunteer workers responsible for the safety of motor racing competitors. They are stationed at various points of danger around race tracks to assist them in case of any collisions, accidents or track problems. Marshals are also known as course workers, corner workers, corner crews, turn marshals, corner marshals, track safety workers, or (in rallying) rally.

 

The marshalling responsibilities are divided in to various roles & categories starting from Race control to Trackside, Medical & Emergency, Pit & Grid, Sector, Course and Stage to name a few. The ultimate objective of having volunteer marshals is to ensure the safety of Competitors, Spectators and their fellow Marshals while maintaining a very high standard of safety during the race meet on track & off track.

 

The Ceylon Motor Sports Club with the assistance of the FIA & CAMS Australia initiated training sessions for Sri Lankan motor sports marshal’s to be trained as volunteer race officials to gain international exposure and experience in order to up lift the standard of motor sports marshalling in Sri Lanka. Having the very first CAMS Training in 2010 a team of volunteer marshals got the opportunity to obtain on the job training at the Singapore F1 in 2011. From hen onwards our very own marshals were part of the Singapore, Australian and Indian F1 races officiating in various categories.

 

Sri Lanka was awarded the Best Formula 1 official award twice within a span of 5 years in 2016 (Kalinga Samaraweera) & 2020 (Vijitha Wijemanne) in recognition of the contribution made towards motor sports marshaling locally & internationally.
